Summary

The procedure that follows explains how to clean and lubricate the XY-axes of the machine.

Properly lubricated XY-axes will prevent:

  • XY-axes binding.
  • XY-axes squeaks when in motion.
  • Jittering at high speeds.
  • Inconsistent print layers.

Prepare the Machine

  1. Home XYZ.
  2. Lower the Z-axis by 300 mm.
  3. Push the E-stop button.
  4. Wait until the build chamber, build plate and hot ends are at room temperature.

Clean XY-Axes

Allow all machine components to reach room temperature prior to proceeding further. Failure to allow components to cool down will result in thermal injury (burns) to personnel.

Always use personal protective equipment when dealing with chemicals, solvents and/or lubricants. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s safety precautions found on the Krytox GPL 225 label.

  1. Do the steps that follow for the X-axis linear rail (1):
    1. Clean the X-axis linear rail (1) with isopropyl alcohol and a clean lint-free rag as necessary.
    2. Manually move T0 (2) and T1 (3) to the center of the linear rail (1).
    3. Remove all contaminants from the now-exposed X-axis linear rail (1). Clean with isopropyl alcohol and a clean lint-free rag as necessary.
    4. Remove all contaminants found on the two linear guides (4). Clean with isopropyl alcohol and a clean lint-free rag as necessary.
  2. Do the steps that follow for the two Y-axis linear rails (6):
    1. Clean the exposed two linear rails (6) with isopropyl alcohol and a clean lint-free rag.
    2. Manually move the Y-axis gantry (5) to the back of the machine. Make sure to push at the center of the Y-axis gantry (5).
    3. Remove all contaminants from the now-exposed two Y-axis linear rails (6). Clean with isopropyl alcohol and a clean lint-free rag as necessary.
    4. Remove all contaminants found on two linear guides (9). Clean with isopropyl alcohol and a clean lint-free rag as necessary.

Lubricate XY-Axis Linear Guides and Rails

Only use Krytox GPL 225 grease to lubricate the X and Y axis linear components. The Krytox GPL 225 grease has been specifically selected for its chemical compatibility with the motion components and its resistance to high temperature environments. Failure to use Krytox GPL 225 will cause X and Y-axes to bind and/or squeak, cause inconsistent print layers, and jittering at high speeds. The use of alternative products will void the AON3D warranty. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s safety precautions on the Krytox GPL 225 label.

  1. Do the steps that follow for all X and Y-axis linear guides (4)(9):
    1. Fill the grease gun cartridge with Krytox GPL 225 High Temperature Grease.
    2. Put the grease gun (10) squarely against the linear guide grease fitting (8).
    3. Push the grease gun (10) fitting tightly against the grease fitting (8) found on the linear guides (4)(9).
    4. Carefully fill the linear guides (4)(9) with grease with use of the grease gun (10).

      The linear guides (4)(9) are at full capacity when a small amount of grease exits from underneath the linear guides.

    5. Remove the grease gun (10) from the linear guide grease fitting (8).
    6. Remove excess grease from the linear guide (4)(9) with a clean lint-free rag. Do not use isopropyl alcohol.
    7. Do steps A to F for all four linear guides (4)(9). XY-Axis Grease Gun XY-Axis No Grease Gun
  2. If the linear guides do not have a grease fitting (8), do the steps that follow for each of the linear guides (4)(9):
    1. With the use of the Phillips No.0 screwdriver, remove the two screws (11).
    2. Carefully remove the front linear guide wiper (12).
    3. Put a small amount of grease against the bearing retainer (13) on both sides of the linear rails (1)(6).
    4. Manually move T0 (2) and T1 (3) in the left and right direction on the X-axis linear rail (1) three times to distribute the grease.
    5. Manually move the Y-axis gantry (5) back and forth three times on the linear rails (6) to distribute the grease.
    6. Install the linear guide wiper (12) and two screws (11).
    7. Do steps A to G for four linear guides (4)(9).
  3. Release the E-stop button.
  4. Home XYZ.
  5. Lower the Z-axis by 300 mm.
  6. Do the steps that follow to distribute the grease along the linear rails (1)(6) and the linear guides (4)(9): Grease Delivery
    1. On the machine interface, navigate to the Control tab.
    2. Set Jog Distance to 100 mm and the Jog Speed to 10000 mm/min.
    3. Push the up arrow four times to move Y-axis gantry to the back of the machine.
    4. Push the down arrow four times to return the Y-axis gantry to the home position.
    5. Move T0 to the right of the linear rail (1) machine using the right arrow four times.
    6. Select Left Tool to return T0 to home position.
    7. Move T1 to the left of the linear rail (1) machine using the left arrow four times.
    8. Select Right Tool to return T1 to home position.
  7. Push the E-stop button.
  8. Remove any accumulated grease where the meet the linear rails (1)(6) meet the linear guides (4)(9) with a clean lint-free rag. Do not use isopropyl alcohol.

Test and Return to Service

  1. Release the E-stop button.
  2. Home XYZ.
