Summary

This procedure gives the instructions on where to look for defects on the build plate of your machine. A build plate in good condition helps:

  • First layer to stick correctly.
  • Equal layers.

Prepare the Machine

  1. Home XYZ.
  2. Lower the Z-axis by 200 mm.
  3. Push the E-stop button.
  4. Wait until the build chamber, build plate and hot ends are at room temperature.

Build Plate Inspection

  1. With a wire brush, remove the unwanted material from the build plate surface (1).
    High-Temperature Build Plate Low-Temperature Build Plate

  2. Do a visual inspection of the build plate and make sure it obeys these conditions:
    1. No damage, such as cracks or holes.
    2. No warping.
    3. No contamination, such as liquid or dust.
    4. Kapton tape is completely stuck to the build plate (Low-temperature plate only).
  3. If there is damage, repair or replace the build plate.

    If the damage on the build plate is small enough, it is possible to print on a section that is not damaged.

  4. If there is contamination, continue with step 4.a.:
    1. With a cloth, and isopropyl alcohol, clean the build plate.
    2. Wait five minutes until the build plate is dry.
  5. Steps 5.a. to 5.d. are for the high-temperature build plate only:
    1. Make sure that the 16 screws (2) that hold the high-temperature build plate (1) on the bed assembly (3) are not loose. Build Plate Screws
    2. If the screws are loose, continue with step 5.c.:

      Do not tighten the screws too much. This can cause damage to the build plate. Only tighten the screws until they are torqued correctly.

    3. With the 3 mm hex key, tighten the loose screws.
    4. Torque the applicable screws to 0.3 N-m
  6. Make sure that all the dovetail locks (4) hold the bed assembly (3) correctly on the base plate (5). Dovetail Locks
  7. If the build plate is loose, continue as follows:
    1. With the 3 mm hex key, tighten the set screw (6) by hand. Dovetail Lock Screws
    2. Do the step 7.a. with every loose dovetail lock.

Test and Return to Service

  1. Release the E-stop button.
  2. Home XYZ.
