The procedure that follows explains how to inspect the AON-M2 build plate.

A build plate in good condition helps:

  • Improve first layer adhesion.
  • Print layer reliability and quality.

Prepare the Machine

  1. Home XYZ.
  2. Lower the Z-axis by 300 mm.
  3. Push the E-stop button.
  4. Wait until the build chamber, build plate and hot ends are at room temperature.

Build Plate Inspection

Allow all machine components to reach room temperature prior to proceeding further. Failure to allow components to cool down will result in thermal injury (burns) to personnel.

HT Build Plate | LT Build Plate

  1. Open the build chamber door.
  2. Remove all unwanted materials from the build plate print surface (1) with the metal scraper and, if necessary, a mallet. The use of 220-grit sandpaper is also recommended.

    Do not use a wire brush on the Kapton® tape, nor on the bare aluminum build plate. The use of a wire brush will damage the print surface.

  3. Do a visual inspection of the build plate print surface and make sure it obeys these conditions:
    • No damage, such as cracks and/or holes.
    • No warping.
    • No contamination, such as liquid and/or dust.
    • Kapton® tape is fully stuck to the build plate (low-temperature build plate only).
  4. If the build plate print surface is damaged, repair the build plate as follows:
    • To resurface the high-temperature build plate, refer to Resurfacing The High-Temperature Build Plate.
    • To reapply new Kapton® tape onto the low-temperature build plate, refer to Kapton® Tape Application.

      If the damage build plate print surface is small, it is possible to print on a section that is not damaged.

  5. If there is contamination on the build plate print surface, do the steps that follow:
    1. Use isopropyl alcohol and a clean lint-free rag to remove all contaminants.
    2. Wait five minutes until the build plate print surface is dry.
    3. Do steps 5a and 5b as necessary until the build plate print surface is clean.
  6. Steps 6a to 6c are for the high-temperature build plate only:
    1. Make sure that all 16 screws (2) that hold the high-temperature build plate (1) onto the bed assembly (3) are tight.
    2. If the 16 screws (2) are not tight, continue with step 6c:
    3. With the 3 mm hex drive bit, 3 mm socket, and the torque wrench, tighten all loose screws (2) to 0.3 Nm. Build Plate Screws

      Do not tighten the screws (2) too much. This will damage to the build plate. Only tighten the screws (2) with the torque wrench to 0.3 Nm.

  7. Make sure that the two side dovetail locks (4) hold the bed assembly (3) correctly onto the base plate (5). Dovetail Locks
  8. If the build plate is loose, do the steps that follow:
    1. Use the 3 mm hex key to tighten the center set screw (6) found on the dovetail lock.
    2. Do step 8a with the center set screw (6) found on the dovetail lock on the opposite side of the build plate. Dovetail Lock Screws Tighten the set screw on the clamp

      Do not tighten the two flathead screws found on the dovetail locks. Only tighten the set screw that is found at the center of the dovetail lock.

Test and Return to Service

  1. Make sure all tools are removed from the build chamber.
  2. Close the build chamber door.
  3. Release the E-stop button.
  4. Home XYZ.
