Linear Rails, Linear Shafts, and Lead Screws Inspection for Contamination

Model [X] AON-M2 [X] AON-M2 2020
Category [X] Preventive [ ] Corrective [ ] Troubleshooting

Summary

This procedure gives the instructions on how to look for contamination and unwanted material on the linear rails, linear shafts and lead screws of the machine. Well cleaned components prevent:

  • X-axis and/or Y-axis and/or Z-axis binding.
  • Loud noises when the axes move.
  • Layers that are not equal.

Tools

1 Clean Wire Brush Soft-bristle

Personal Protective Equipment

Qty Description Specification
1 Safety Glasses N/A

Prepare the Machine

  1. Home XYZ.
  2. Lower the Z-axis by 200 mm.
  3. Push the E-stop button.
  4. Wait until the build chamber, build plate and hot ends are at room temperature.

X-axis Linear Rail Inspection

X-Axis Inspection

  1. On all the surfaces of the X-axis linear rail (1), look for unwanted materials that can cause interference with the components that move.
  2. If you find unwanted material, remove it with a clean wire brush.
  3. Look for signs of contamination such as liquids or dust.
  4. Remove contamination as necessary. Refer to Clean and lubricate the XY-axes.
  5. Manually move T0 (2) and T1 to the center of the the X-axis.
  6. Do steps 1. to 4. with the remaining section of the linear rail.

Y-axis Linear Rails Inspection

Y-Axis Inspection

  1. Do the steps that follow for the two Y-axes linear rails (3):
    1. On all surfaces of the linear rail, look for unwanted materials that can cause interference with the components that move.
    2. If you find unwanted materials, remove it with a clean wire brush.
    3. Look for signs of contamination such as liquids or dust.
    4. Remove contamination as necessary. Refer to Clean and Lubricate XY-Axes.
    5. Manually push the middle of the X-axis assembly (4) to move it the center of the the Y-axis.
    6. Do steps 1.a. to 1.d. with the remaining section of the linear rail.

Z-axis Linear Shafts and Lead Screws Inspection

Z-Axis Inspection

  1. Do the steps that follow for the Z-axis linear shafts (5) and both lead screws (6):
    1. Look for unwanted material that can cause interference with the components that move.
    2. If you find unwanted material, remove it with a clean wire brush.
    3. Look for signs of contamination such as liquids or dust.
    4. Remove contamination as necessary. Refer to Clean and lubricate the Z-axis.
    5. Release the E-stop button.
    6. Close the door of the machine.
    7. Home XYZ.
    8. Push the E-stop button.
    9. Do steps 1.a. to 1.d. with the remaining section of the linear shafts and the lead screws.

Test and Return to Service

  1. Release the E-stop button.
  2. Home XYZ.
