The procedure that follows gives instructions on how to clean and lubricate the two extruders.

The use of Loctite® LB 8042 or Permatex® 80345 white lithium grease can be used to lubricate the internal extruder drive gears.

Prepare the Machine

Make sure that there are no prints on the build surface. Remove print(s) before the procedure that follows is started. Failure to do so can cause a collision which can cause damage to the machine component(s).

  1. Unload the filament from the extruder. Refer to Load Filament.
  2. Home XYZ.
  3. Lower the Z-axis by 300 mm.
  4. Push the E-stop button.
  5. Open the build chamber door.
  6. Turn the power OFF with the ON/OFF switch found behind the machine.
  7. Wait until the build chamber, build platform and hot ends are at room temperature.

    Wait until all machine components are at room temperature before you continue. Some machine components can be hot if the machine was recently used. Failure to do so can cause injuries.

  8. Remove the probe assembly:

Remove the Extruder

Remove the Extruder AON-M2, M2-2020, and M2+

Detach Extruder

  1. Use the 2.5 mm hex key to remove the extruder top screw (1) and bottom screw (2).
  2. Carefully remove the extruder assembly from the toolhead plate.

    Do not disconnect the cooling loop and electrical cable that are attached to the extruder assembly.

  3. Rotate the extruder assembly approximately 45 degrees, and carefully put it on top of the toolhead carriage plate.

Remove the Extruder M2+ (CE)

Detach Extruder

  1. Use the 2.5 mm hex key to remove the extruder top screw (1).
  2. Carefully remove the extruder assembly from the toolhead plate.

    Do not disconnect the cooling loop and electrical cable that are attached to the extruder assembly.

  3. Rotate the extruder assembly approximately 45 degrees, and carefully put it on top of the toolhead carriage plate.

Disassemble the Extruder

Remove Extruder Front Cover

  1. Use the 2 mm hex key to remove the two front cover screws (3) on the extruder assembly.

    Internal extruder components are small and can fall when the sections are separated. Make sure to disassemble the extruder on a suitable work bench.

  2. Carefully remove the extruder front and rear sections. Separate Extruder Sections
  3. Use the pliers to remove the two gears (4) from the extruder cover.
  4. Use the 2 mm hex key to remove the two screws (5)(6).
  5. Carefully lift the extruder lever assembly to release the spring (7). remove lever

Clean and Lubricate Extruder

  1. Use the small brush to remove all the filament debris found on the gears.
  2. Use the isopropyl alcohol and lint-free rag(s) to remove all contaminants from the gears.
  3. Inspect the two drive gears for wear and/or damages. Replace if necessary.
  4. Use the applicator brush to apply a small amount of white lithium grease to the teeth found on the four gears (8).

Lubricate Gears

Do not apply white lithium grease the to filament radii (9). The filament radii (9) must operate dry. Lubrication on the filament radii (9) will cause unsatisfactory print quality and can cause damages to the machine component(s).

Do Not Lubricate Filament Radii

Assemble the Extruder

  1. Install the gears inside the extruder housing:
    1. Make sure that the gear teeth are lubricated with white lithium grease.
    2. Make sure that the gears are correctly positioned in the extruder housing.
  2. Manually install the screw (6) and tighten with the 2 mm hex key.
  3. Use the pliers to hook the top end of the spring (7) to the extruder lever assembly.
  4. Manually install the screw (5) and tighten with the 2 mm hex key.
  5. Position the extruder sections onto the motor. Make sure drive gear teeth mesh correctly.
  6. Manually install the two front cover screws (3). Do not tighten the two front screws (3) at this point in time.

Install the Extruder

  1. Position the extruder assembly onto the toolhead plate.
    • For the M2+ (CE), make sure that the guide post (10) is aligned with the hole (11) in the toolhead plate.
  2. Manually install the extruder screws:
    • For the M2, M2 2020, and M2+, install the top screw (1) and bottom screw (2).
    • For the M2+ (CE), install the top screw (1).
  3. Use the 2.5 mm hex key to lightly tighten the extruder screws. Do not tighten the extruder screws at this point in time.
  4. Use the torque wrench, the 3 mm socket, and the 3 mm hex bit to tighten the extruder screws to 2.0 N·m.
  5. Use the 2 mm hex key to tighten the two front screws (3).
  6. Make sure that the screws that follow are tight:
    • One extruder top screw (1)
    • One extruder bottom screw (2)
    • Two front cover screws (3).

Test and Return to Service

  1. Install the probe assembly:
  2. Make sure that you remove all the tools from the build chamber.
  3. Close the build chamber door.
  4. Turn the power ON with the ON/OFF switch found on the rear panel of the machine.
  5. Release the E-stop button.
  6. Home XYZ.
