Install the Extruder Pro

Model [] AON M2+ (CE) [] AON M2+ (R-NZ) [] AON M2+ [] AON-M2 2020 [] AON-M2
Category [] Installation [ ] Operation [ ] Maintenance

Summary

The procedure that follows gives instructions on how to install the Extruder Pro assemblies onto the AON3D machine.

The advantages of the Extruder Pro assemblies are as follows:

  • Better wear resistance for composite-filled filament
  • Increased print speeds
  • Improved push force

Estimated time: 60 minutes

AON3D recommends using the Extruder Pro assemblies in combination with the tungsten carbide nozzles for composite-filled filament.

The Extruder Pro assemblies require the filament feed path upgrade to be installed onto the machine.
The AON M2+ includes the feed path upgrade kit as standard equipment.
AON3D offers a feed path upgrade kit (part number K-0999-012) for the AON-M2 2020 and AON-M2 models.

Modify the Machine Settings

The extruder step-per-mm value must be re-entered if the following happens:
• Machine firmware is updated.
• Machine SD card is replaced.
• Machine EEPROM is reset with the M502 and M500 commands.
• Machine is Reset to Factory Default using the Purge button on the GUI.

Klipper-Based Firmware

This procedure applies for the AON M2+ (CE), AON M2+ (R-NZ) and AON M2+ machines with application version starting at version 45dccb0.

  1. On the Graphical User Interface (GUI), select Terminal.
  2. Change the value of the extruder motor steps (steps-per-mm) to extruder pro value.
    1. For machines that have the original stepper driver resolution configuration: Input the SET_EXTRUDER_MODEL MODEL=pro command and select enter.
    2. For machines that have the modified stepper driver configuration: Input the SET_EXTRUDER_MODEL MODEL=pro_4x command and select enter.
  3. Input the SAVE_CONFIG command and select enter. This will save the new configuration to the EEPROM.

Marlin-Based Firmware

This procedure applies for machines with application version v2022.07.04.21.14.

  1. On the Graphical User Interface (GUI), select Terminal.
  2. Input the M92 E684 command and select enter. This will set the value of the extruder motor steps (steps-per-mm) to 684 steps-per-mm.
  3. Input the M500 command and select enter. This will save the new configuration to the EEPROM.
  4. Input M503 to report current configuration.
  5. Verify that the step per unit are identical as follows:
    Steps per unit (step/mm):
    M92 X40.0000 Y40.0000 Z400.0000 E684.0000

Prepare the Machine

  1. Unload the filament from the extruder. Refer to Replace Filament.
  2. Home XYZ.
  3. Lower the Z-axis by 300 mm.
  4. Open the build chamber door.
  5. Push the E-stop button.
  6. Turn the power OFF with the ON/OFF switch found on the rear panel of the machine.
    • For AON M2+ (CE) machines:
Disconnect power to the machine from the local supply disconnecting device.
    • For AON M2+ (R-NZ), AON2 M2+, AON-M2 2020, and AON-M2 machines:
Disconnect the main power cord from the receptacle.
  7. Wait until the build chamber, build platform and hot ends are at room temperature.

Remove the Extruders

Wait until all machine components are at room temperature before you continue. Some machine components can be hot if the machine was recently used. Failure to do so can cause injuries.

  1. Remove the extruders on T0 and T1:

Install the Extruder Pro

  1. Use the new hardware provided to install the Extruder Pro onto the extruder motors on T0 and T1:

There are more fasteners in the provided kit than required to account for different machine models.

Test and Return to Service

  1. Make sure that you remove all the tools from the build chamber.
  2. Close the build chamber door.
    • For AON M2+ (CE) machines:
Connect power to the machine from the local supply disconnecting device.
    • For AON M2+ (R-NZ), AON2 M2+, AON-M2 2020, and AON-M2 machines:
Connect the main power cord to the receptacle.
  3. Turn the power ON with the ON/OFF switch found on the rear panel of the machine.
  4. Release the E-stop button.
  5. Home XYZ.
