To replace the Kapton® polyimide tape on the AON-M2 low-temperature build plate, refer to Replace Kapton® Polyimide Tape.

Summary

The procedure that follows gives the instructions on how to resurface the AON-M2 High-Temperature Build Plate. To resurface the High-Temperature Build Plate, the build plate surface is prepared with different sandpaper grits to help with the part(s) adhesion. A flat and rough build surface will help improve the print quality.

Estimated time: 60 minutes

The High-Temperature Build Plate is resurfaced when:

  • Small pieces, and/or thin layers of material, are stuck to the build surface.
  • The printed parts do not stick to build surface correctly.
  • The build surface is damaged.

The High-Temperature Build Plate is made from a Polyetherimide (PEI) plate mounted on an aluminum base plate.

Prepare the Machine

Make sure that there are no prints on the build surface. Remove print(s) before the procedure that follows is started. Failure to do so can cause a collision and cause damage to the machine component(s).

  1. Home XYZ.
  2. Lower the Z-axis by 300 mm.
  3. Push the E-stop button.
  4. Open the build chamber door.
  5. Wait until the build chamber, build platform and hot ends are at room temperature.

Remove the Build Plate

Wait until all the machine components are at room temperature before you continue. Some machine components can be hot if the machine was recently used. Failure to do so can cause injuries.

  1. Remove the build plate. Refer to Install Build Plate.
  2. Put the build plate on a clean workbench.

Resurface the Build Plate Surface

Use the shop vacuum cleaner frequently to collect the PEI dust that is made from sanding the build plate surface. This will help contain the PEI dust.

Do not sand the PEI surface too much. There is 1 mm (0.04 inches) of extra material on the PEI surface. Stop sanding the PEI surface when the 0.039 inch (1 mm) is removed. The removal of too much material can cause damages to the PEI surface. If too much material is removed, a new High-Temperature Build Plate will need to be purchased.

Do not put too much pressure on the orbital sander when the build plate surface is being corrected. Too much pressure on the orbital sander:
• Can make the build plate surface too hot and cause an uneven print surface.
• Can remove material from the build plate at a faster rate which can cause damage to the build plate surface.

  1. Use the orbital sander and the 120-grit pad to carefully remove the material that has built up on the print surface. Do not remove too much material.
    • Use the straight edge to carefully inspect the flatness of the build plate.
    • Stop sanding if you have already removed 1 mm of material from the original build plate.
  2. Use the shop vacuum cleaner to remove the dust on the build plate area, perimeter, and bolts.
  3. Use the orbital sander and the 180-grit pad to carefully remove the material that has built up on the print surface. Do not remove too much material.
    • Use the straight edge to carefully inspect the flatness of the build plate.
    • Stop sanding if you have already removed 1 mm of material from the original build plate.
  4. Use the shop vacuum cleaner to remove the dust on the build plate area, perimeter, and bolts.
  5. Manually use the 220-grit sand pad to get a flat surface. Do not remove too much material.
    • Use the straight edge to carefully inspect the flatness of the build plate.
    • Stop sanding if you have already removed 1 mm of material from the original build plate.
  6. Use the shop vacuum cleaner to remove the dust on the build plate area, perimeter, and bolts.
  7. Use the lint-free rag and isopropyl alcohol to clean the build plate.
  8. Let the build plate dry for two minutes.

Test and Return to Service

  1. Install the build plate. Refer to Install Build Plate.
  2. Close the build chamber door.
