Prepare the Machine

Make sure that there are no prints on the build surface. Remove print(s) before the procedure that follows is started. Failure to do so can cause a collision and cause damage to the machine component(s).

  1. Unload the filament from the extruder. Refer to Load Filament.
  2. Home XYZ.
  3. Lower the Z-axis to 300 mm.
  4. Open the build chamber door.
  5. Push the E-stop button.
  6. Turn the power OFF with the ON/OFF switch found behind the machine.
    • For AON M2+ (CE) machines: Disconnect power to the machine from the local supply disconnecting device.
    • For AON M2+ (R-NZ), AON M2+, AON-M2 2020 and AON-M2 machines: Disconnect the main power cord from the receptacle.

Dangerous voltages continue to be found in the electrical panel when the ON/OFF switch is set to OFF. Disconnect the main power cord from the machine while maintenance is done. Failure to do so can cause electric shock.

  7. Wait until the build chamber, build platform and hot ends are at room temperature.

Remove the X-Axis Motors

Wait until all the machine components are at room temperature before you continue. Some machine components can be hot if the machine was recently used. Failure to do so can cause injuries.

X-axis motor

  1. Disconnect the power cable from the X-axis motor (1).

Be careful when the coolant tube clamps are removed. The coolant tubes are soft and the two coolant tube clamps can be sharp.

  2. Disconnect the two coolant tubes from the X-axis motor (1) cooling block as follows:
    1. Use the non-glossy tape and the marker to correctly identify the two coolant tubes attached to the X-axis motor (1) cooling block inlets and outlets ports.
    2. Use the small flathead screwdriver to loosen the screws found on the two coolant tube clamps.
    3. Use the non-glossy tape to temporary attach the loose coolant tube clamps on the two coolant tubes.
    4. Remove the two coolant tubes from the X-axis motor (1) cooling block inlet and outlet ports.
    5. Put the 3-liter bucket under the two coolant tubes and let the coolant drain.
    6. Use a lint-free rag and isopropyl alcohol to clean the spilled coolant, if necessary.
  3. Remove the X-axis belt. Refer to Replace X-Axis Belt.
  4. Remove the extruder from the toolhead carrier plate (2). Refer to Replace Extruders.
    • Carefully set the extruder to the side of the toolhead carrier plate (2). Exploded view X-axis motor and shim
  5. Remove the components that follow to remove the X-axis motor (1) from the from the carrier plate (2):
    • Four screws (3)
    • Four Nordlock® lock washers (4)
    • One 2 mm shim (5)
    • One 1 mm shim (6).
  6. Remove the X-axis motor (1).
  7. Discard the X-axis motor (1) and four lock washers (4) in accordance with the local laws and/or regulations.
  8. Do steps 1 to 7 for the adjacent X-axis motor, if necessary.

Install the New X-Axis Motor

  1. Use a lint-free rag and isopropyl alcohol to clean the top of the toolhead carrier plate (2), if necessary. Make sure that the top of the toolhead carrier plate (2) is clean.
  2. Let the toolhead carrier plate (2) top surface dry for two minutes.
  3. Put the components that follow in position onto the toolhead carrier plate (2):
    • One 1 mm shim (6)
    • One 2 mm shim (5)
    • One new X-axis motor (1).
  4. Install one Nordlock® lock washers (4) onto one screw (3). Do this step four times.
  5. Use the 2.5 mm hex key to install the four screws (3) and the Nordlock® lock washers (4) from under the toolhead carrier plate (2) and into the X-axis motor (3). Do not tighten the four screws (3) with the use of the 2.5 mm hex key.
  6. Use the torque wrench, the 3 mm socket, and the 2.5 mm hex bit to tighten the four screws (3) to 2.0 N·m.
  7. Connect the two coolant tubes to the X-axis motor (1) cooling block inlet and outlet ports.

Be careful when the coolant tube clamps are installed. The coolant tubes are soft and the two coolant tube clamps can be sharp.

  8. Put the two coolant tube clamps in position onto the two coolant tubes.
  9. Use the small flathead screwdriver to tighten the screw found on the two coolant tube clamps.
  10. Connect the power cable to the new X-axis motor (1).
  11. Install the X-axis belt. Refer to Replace X-Axis Belt.
  12. Install the extruder onto the toolhead carrier plate (2). Refer to Replace Extruders.
  13. Do steps 1 to 12 for the adjacent X-axis motor, if necessary.
  14. Fill the cooling system, if necessary. Refer to Inspect Coolant Level.

Test and Return to Service

  1. Make sure that you remove all the tools from the build chamber.
  2. Close the build chamber door.
    • For AON M2+ (CE) machines: Connect power to the machine from the local supply disconnecting device.
    • For AON M2+ (R-NZ), AON M2+, AON-M2 2020 and AON-M2 machines: Connect the main power cord to the receptacle.
  3. Turn the power ON with the ON/OFF switch found on the rear panel of the machine.
