Summary

The AON3D Automatic Bed Leveling (ABL) Feature uses the Z-axis probe(s) to measure the distance between the print surface and the nozzle(s) at different preset locations of a grid. The machine firmware uses the information from the Z-axis probing and the Z offset values to make adjustments between the nozzle and the print surface. This feature is ideal when the operator must frequently change the build plates or the build sheets.

AON3D recommends that the print surface be probed before every print, and/or, when:

  • The machine is moved and/or leveled.
  • There is a change of ±20°C (±68°F) in component temperature(s).
  • There is a change of print surfaces.
  • Heater block assembly adjustments, removal, maintenance and/or repair occur.

Mesh Probe

Before a mesh is probed, it is necessary to power ON the heat for the bed and build chamber to the recommended print temperatures. All build chamber components must be at the stable temperature before a mesh is probed. Refer to Preheat Build Chamber Components.

To create the multi-point grid, the AON3D machine uses the toolhead(s) to probe the print surface in a series of points. The probed values are then transferred into a probe mesh.

  • Each toolhead has its own mesh and Z offset, and must be calibrated independently.

  • By default, the meshes are set to a flat 30 mm at all probe points, and the Z offset is set to 3 mm. This results in the print surface that has a zero point that is 33 mm below the Z-axis end stops.

Default values are present until they are overwritten. Once the print surface has been probed, the new mesh values will be saved to the last recorded values.

  • On the Marlin-based firmware, the default grid can be resized to probe a smaller print area, if necessary.

Z Offset Calibration

When the two toolheads are used for the same print, the print surface must be probed with the use of the two toolheads. This is to prevent error(s) between the two toolheads, and will also make sure that if one toolhead is out of service, the adjacent toolhead can operate correctly.

X/Y Toolhead Offsets Calibration

If a print uses the two toolheads for the same print, the two toolheads must be calibrated along the X/Y-axes before a print is started. The X/Y toolhead offsets calibration procedure adjusts the coordinate system of the two toolheads to be in line with each other.

Refer to the X/Y Toolhead Offsets Calibration procedure.
